As hamburgers go, so goes America?
Article Abstract:
The hamburger remains popular in the US despite outbreaks of E. coli contamination in 1997 and previous years. The hamburger evolved from a raw meat dish from Hamburg, Germany into the cooked, dressed and bun-encased food that it is. McDonald's restaurants symbolize the hamburger's popularity.

McDonald's is making a concerted effort to grow outside of the US, as its domestic market has begun to stagnate. The 38% of the McDonald's that are outside of the US now account 47% of overall sales and 54% of overall operating profit, while domestic sales have been dropping.

McDonald's has built a successful overseas unit, and began expanding its operations into Africa in 1995, in South Africa. The company faced legal battles and stiff competition from local fast-food companies, and has had to adjust its menu to suit the tastes of locals.
