Asean apathy: Indonesia proposes a regional peacekeeping force, but neighbors show little interest
Article Abstract:
Fingers were pointed at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for not responding quickly to the crisis in East Timor in the late 1990s and to avoid a repeat of such instances, Indonesia has proposed a regional peacekeeping force. Unfortunately, none of the other ASEAN members have endorsed this view even as the United Nations has welcomed the announcement but experts feel that a peacekeeping force may be a stillborn idea due to differences among member nations.
