Asia Pacific bounces back
Article Abstract:
Air passenger traffic in the Asia Pacific region has rebounded after being the only region to experience a decline in 1998. The Airports Council International (ACI) reported that traffic in the region increased by 5% in 1999, slightly more than the 4.7% growth posted by other ACI regions. In 1998, traffic in the region fell by 5.6% while there was a worldwide growth of 2.9%. Among the airports which handled the highest volume of traffic were those in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Seoul, Paris, London, Las Vegas and Singapore.

Cathay saves time on trans-polar route
Article Abstract:
The first transpolar flight from Canada by an airline was recorded by Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd when one of its Airbus 340-300 flew nonstop from Toronto, Canada, to Hong Kong. The monumental flight carried 127 passengers and 16 staff, plus 18 tons of freight. It took the Polar 2A route, which flew over Hudson Bay, came within 50 nm of the North Pole befor flying south through Russia, Mongolia and China. Cathay Pacific's Canada-Hong Kong tranpolar flight was shorter by three hours compared to flights taking the normal route.
