Motorola expects Asia to be its largest source of revenue within the next decade. Sales of semiconductor chips, pagers, cellular telephones and other mobile communications devices are growing faster in Asia than in Europe or the US. The company has operations in Hong Kong, Japan, India and will begin production in China in 1994.

Intel's monopoly on 486 microprocessors, which is responsible for the most of the firm's $548 million 1st qtr 1993 profit, is threatened by a court decision allowing rival Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to introduce a clone 486. AMD is also designing a new 486 chip with its own microcode.
