Article Abstract:
Asia appears to have passed the worst of its recession, and is undergoing an economic recovery. There have been improvements in domestic consumption and industrial production. Countries that are performing well include South Korea, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, which have all recorded economic growth for 1st qtr 1999 following a period when there was a contraction. Indonesia and Malaysia are still undergoing contractions, while China, India and Taiwan were less affected by the crisis.

There are some indications that Asia's economic performance is beginning to improve, but the region will continue to face significant economic and political difficulties in the period to 2001 as governments undertake financial and corporate reform. Inflationary pressures have eased in most Asian countries, and it has also been possible to build up current account surpluses and foreign exchange reserves. This has allowed a reduction in domestic interest rates.
