North America
Article Abstract:
Experts now believe that the US economy will continue to be buoyant and set new records for the length of an economic boom. Economic growth in 1998 was 3.9% and the forecast for 1999 is 3.2%. Inflation was 1.6% in 1998. Experts believe that inflation will continue to be generally low, although factors could create medium-term inflation of 3-4%. Low commodity prices affected the Canadian economy, but Canada's economic outlook is, once again, similar to that of the US. Experts are debating whether the high growth coupled with low inflation represents a permanent change in the North American economy.

North America
Article Abstract:
Strong US economic growth continued in 1st qtr 1998, with real gross domestic product up by 4.2% in annualized terms. Incomes and employment have grown, and the stock market has contributed to a wealth effect, while consumer credit has increased. Exports are hampered by the Asian crisis, which is also tending to increase imports. A rise in US interest rates appears to be needed. Meanwhile, the Canadian economy is recovering and appears to be less affected by the Asian crisis.
