Asian tech shares: got yours?
Article Abstract:
Foreign investors, particularly US investors, are speculating in Asia's technology companies and secondary stock exchanges are booming. However, the contributions of Asian fund managers to the important and growing sector of the Asian economy continues to be negligible. For instance, only two out of the 1,500 mutual funds registered in Hong Kong specialize in Asian technology. About 50% of the stock brokerage firms in Asia cover telecommunications, but the lack of biotech analysts also creates a void in the critical mass needed to launch specific technology funds.

Asian games blur borders: event draws athletes from Syria to Japan
Article Abstract:
The diversity of athletes at the 1998 Asian Games shows that borders between countries are easily blurred. Athletes from countries such as Iran and Uzbekistan, for instance, participated in the event although neither considered themselves Asian when asked. One explanation for this quandary is the International Olympic Committee's decision to classify these countries as part of the Asian region, thereby making them eligible to join the games.

Publisher bets on the region; Reader's Digest purchases Asian fund magazine
Article Abstract:
Reader's Digest Assn Inc's acquisition of Benchmark Ltd, a publisher that specializes on Asian mutual funds is part of its strategy to channel its resources into the investment sector. The effort to get its readership of five million to get interested in funds has had precedents in Asia where they have met with little success. Despite the plummeting share prices of investments, investors have insisted on concentrating on individual stocks.
