Asia's boardroom brass
Article Abstract:
The armed forces have been involved in business in a number of Asian countries such as Indonesia, China and Vietnam. This is changing as a result of economic reforms and China has been especially affected by the change in policy. The army was told to leave business activities by year end 1998, as part of a wider drive against corruption. Those army officials who stayed in business have had to leave the army. The withdrawal has led to a number of problems such as the need to reorganize enterprises previously run by the military, and compensation for the withdrawal.
