Asia's leading companies
Article Abstract:
The review of leading Asian companies in 1996 undertaken by Far Eastern Economic Review magazine in association with Citibank produced some very interesting results. Of the leading 20 companies in 1995, 19 were returned in 1996, with Nike replacing Daimler-Benz in the rankings. Technology companies were particularly strongly represented, with Microsoft continuing to hold first place. There was also strong growth for financial services companies, with Citibank in sixth place. Among airlines, those based in the US advanced in the rankings, while most European carriers lost ground.

Asia's leading companies
Article Abstract:
Leading multinationals showed increased strength in a more competitive field, in Far Eastern Economic Review's third annual Review 200, while new leaders appeared in Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, and India. Microsoft passed Coca-Cola as the highest-ranked multinational, and technology companies did well throughout the 1996 survey. Some 4000 respondents in 11 countries ranked both their own country's companies and multinationals operating in the region on their quality, vision, innovativeness, financial strength, and more.

Come together: investment and trade links are growing rapidly in Asia
Article Abstract:
Asia's economic dynamism and growth since World War Two have been unique and astonishing, and experience suggests they will continue. East Asia's regional investment and mutual trade now outstrips its links to the US. Those activities both promote change and development, and inherently reduce the market-interfering power of govt, as business can always move to a more promising environment. Proposals from the Pacific Business Forum and the Eminent Persons Group point the way to further growth.
