Asia's problems are familiar: business practices recall those of the West
Article Abstract:
General Oriental Investments (HK) Ltd. director Jamie O'Donnell comments that the criticisms levelled by a number of Western business experts on the corporate governance of Asians are unfounded, with many Westerners acting belatedly on a number of cases which nearly sunk some established business. These include the celebrate cases of media tycoom Robert Maxwell, who in 1991 plundered his employees' pension funds for rescue funds. O'Donnell believes that the relative immaturity of the Asian business and market environment is the cause of such business errors.

China's nascent managers shun job offers at factories; graduates seeking fame and fortune detect neither in the manufacturing industry
Article Abstract:
New graduates refuse to work in China's manufacturing sector which they consider a sunset industry. Graduates, instead, prefer to take on jobs with high technology industries and investment banks. This, despite the fact that an increasing number of business-management programs have been developed in China solely for the purpose of creating qualified local managers. The choosiness of graduates has rankled some managers who are also familiar with the hardships associated with working in China's factories.
