Planners disagree over new housing guidance
Article Abstract:
The government's new planning guidance has been criticized by housing experts as being too low in density needs and lacking detail. The guidance, Planning Policy Guidance 3, wants to rule out low densities of less than 20-25 per hectare. There is also criticism of the priority given to mixed housing rather than density levels. John Lett, assistant chief planner at LPAC, believes that the sequential approach to choosing sites, with priority given to previously developed land, should apply both regionally and locally.

Turn Britain's cities into powerhouses, says task force
Article Abstract:
Local communities in the UK should be given the means to develop their own approaches to urban development, according to an interim report from the Urban Task Force. This report recommends the implementation of a national design framework which would encourage urban development based on high quality 3D spatial masterplanning. The task force has called for long-term government commitment, with regional capitals or groups of regional cities operating as driving forces.

Breath of fresh air
Article Abstract:
Landscape architects have no understanding of horticulture, according to Landscape Solutions Director Karen Sims-Neighbour. She emphasizes that the British are renowned for their abilities in garden design, but that modern garden design is extremely monotonous. She feels that the traditional manipulative approach to cultivation and maintenance is not appropriate any more, and emphasizes the need for the study of plant sociology and ecology.
