Astra halts car output
Article Abstract:
Astra International of Indonesia has ceased production of automobiles for at least two months due to lack of orders received by the company. Car sales declined by 75% in the first quarter of 1998 against the year-ago period and orders are down to a level that can be met with the current inventory for the next two months. Analysts believe that the company, which has reorganized with a management shakeup, needs to do more than a production stoppage to cope with its troubled financial situation, which would worsen if the rupiah continues to weaken.
