At the heart of a numbers puzzle, freedom = profit
Article Abstract:
China's economy expanded by 10.2%, exports grew by 23% and inflation fell by about one-third in 1995. However, the Shanghai stock market fell by 24% and the Shenzhen market fell by 31%. Such a paradoxical economic event can be explained by the high rate of business expansion in the country in 1995. In addition, many businesses suffered from lower profit margins because of economic stagnation and rising production costs. Another important but less influential reason for the paradox is the poor gathering of economic data.

China recovery could spur rest of Asia
Article Abstract:
China's economic recovery and eventual growth will positively influence the economies of its Asian neighbors, particularly Hong Kong, because of the size of the Chinese market. China's inflation rate has been stabilizing leading the Chinese government to relax its hold on interest rates. Economic analysts believe that China will post a 9% growth rate in 1997 and double-digit rates in the succeeding years.
