Sue you, sue me: foreign firms in China face a wave of complaints
Article Abstract:
Increased consumer and distributor complaints in China target foreign firms, perhaps in the hope of being bought off as well as because of legitimate complaints. From 1990 through 1995 national retail sales rose 11% annually, while complaints handled by the China Consumers' Association rose 10% per year. A growing share of these target image-conscious, wealthy foreign firms such as Coca-Cola and Sony. Companies sometimes pay what is demanded, though some fight back in public and in court, and most take preemptive measures.

Good for what ails you: China's military hospitals get a dose of investment
Article Abstract:
Western healthcare companies, primarily from the US, are investing in China's military hospitals. With troop reductions and shrinking budgets, Chinese military hospitals turned to paying civilian patients, and by 1988, two-thirds of patients were civilians. Canada's Shooting Star Technology and the US's Computerized Thermal Imaging are among the companies that have successfully entered the Chinese market. Larger health care businesses have formed joint ventures with military hospitals as well.
