The separatist movement in Quebec has created a backlash from the province's English-speaking people, who maintain that French separatists are infringing on their rights. There could be an exodus of English speaking people from the province, which could help separatists win the next referendum.

Voting during the recent parliamentary elections fell along territorial lines. Far western Canada favored the Reform Party, central Canada voted for the Liberal Party, and the Atlantic provinces favored Conservatives. Prime Minister Jean Chretien and his Liberals barely eked out a victory.

Canada is considering spending $4.4 billion Canadian dollars on military helicopters. Despite the fact that the government was planning to cut back on military spending it says these contracts will create 15,000 jobs around the country.
