Austria: Austria below EU average for poverty
Article Abstract:
According to an EU study on poverty which was published on 11 September 2001, considerably less people in Austria suffer from poverty than the EU average. However, the commission pinpoints problems in Austria's immigration policy, for example the system of residency and work permits needs to be harmonised. Although the difference in income between men and women is high, the difference between the highest and lowest incomes is less than the EU average. In Austria 13% of the population have an income of less than 60% of the national average, 5% below the figure for the EU. A large factor in this is the social security system, which in Austria amounts to 28.4% of the gross national product, and without which, according to the EU, 25% of Austrians would be "poor". The EU commission expects that the new child benefit laws will further reduce poverty, although it is as yet unsure whether the increased child benefit will discourage mothers from returning to work.
