Austria: Organic boom in carp farming
Article Abstract:
According to the Austrian Association of Organic Farmers (Ernte Verband), 7% or 175 hectares of Austria's fish farms are organically managed. Some 60% of carp ponds are organically farmed, which means that the carp are only allowed to be fed half of their nutritional requirement and that half must be produced organically. Organic carp farmers in Austria produce 60 tonnes of carp per year, which they can sell for around 50% more than non-organic carp. Austria produces in total 1,000 tonnes of fresh water fish per year and imports around 400 tonnes of carp form the Czech Republic.

Austria/Germany: Bavarian businesses move to Austria
Article Abstract:
There is a trend amongst Bavarian small and middle sized businesses to move to Austria, according to Christlich-Soziale Union (CSU) politician Hans Michelbach. Austria is attractive because of its lower taxes and conscious move towards de-bureaucratisation and flexibility of the economy. The trend is likely to become more marked once the euro comes into use in January 2002.
