Austria: Bio-diesel production to increase twenty-fold
Article Abstract:
The EU hopes to increase the use of biological fuels twenty fold in the next ten years. For Austria, where the actual amount of biodiesel used is less than 0.5%, this would mean an increase to 5.75% and a domestic biodiesel consumption of 185,000 tonnes. Presently 30.000 tonnes of bio-fuel are produced, half of which is exported abroad. The biodiesel producers Navaol (Bruck/Leitha) and Donauwind (Zisterdorf) have formed a committee of biological fuel manufacturers in Austria (ABO). They hope to exert pressure on the government in order to organise and synchronise work in this sector. Increasing oil-seed rape production, currently under-produced due to its low price, is seen as a high priority. Currently only 100 petrol stations offer the sale of biodiesel, the price is a little under that of normal diesel. Competitiveness of biodiesel depends on the price of crude oil, and other raw materials such as oil seed rape. With an oil price of US$ 30 per barrel, Martin Dusek, sales manager of Novaol, doesn't see the need for promotion and advertising of his product. Managing director of biodiesel manufacturer SEEG, Karl Totter, foresees 25% of land being farmed for oil products. This figure currently remains at 4%, half of which is used to produce fuel.

AUSTRIA: OIL MILL UPS VALUE-ADDED INPUT
Article Abstract:
Refined rapeseed oil is being produced in Austria again, after Olmuhle in Bruck an der Leitha brought on stream a Sch 250mn refining facility around mid-2000. By the end of year 2000 Olmuhle is to install a bottling facility for Sch 50mn to be able to sell cooking oil in bottles. In order to allow economically viable operation, Olmuhle would need an annual processing volume of no less than 350,000 tonnes. Austria's annual production, however, amounts to less than 150,000 tonnes. The remaining requirement is covered by imports from Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.

AUSTRIA: USED COOKING OIL INTO BIO-DIESEL
Article Abstract:
Donauwind has started construction of Austria's first large-scale production plant for bio-diesel in Zistersdorf. From March 2001 the facility will produce 8,000 tpy of the ecological fuel in one-shift operation. In the longer term production can be increased to up to 30,000 tpy. The plant uses waste fats and cooking oil in the production of the fuel. Just under half of the 40,000 tonnes of used fats and cooking oil disposed in Austria annually is recovered. Donauwind expects the Sch 30mn investment to pay within 3-4 years.
