Austria: Compromise on newspaper postage rates
Article Abstract:
A compromise has been reached in the dispute about the postage rates of print media at the prices commission of Austria's infrastructure ministry. Originally Osterreichische Post wanted to raise the postage rates in three phases to compensate for the abolition of state subsidies for the postage of print media from 2002. The compromise involves a 2-phase increase. From the beginning of 2002 the postage rates will rise by 70%, which is 30% less than the Post had planned. In the second phase, the increase will be about 10% less than planned. For those publishers that remain loyal to the Post until 2006, the hikes will be introduced with a delay. Also the hikes for Saturday delivery will be smaller than planned by the Post.
