Centralised body on food safety and hygiene under study
Article Abstract:
In its study on the restructure of food safety and hygiene standards the Hong Kong government is reported to be seriously considering the creation of a new body along the lines of the US' FDA. The consulant responsible for the study said that a recommendation would be submitted before the end of 1998 and that other systems would be considered, including those in use in Singapore, Japan, the UK and Canada. Albert Lam Chi-chiu said that the attractions of the FDA model included its centralised monitoring responsibility for food production, import, transport and storage.
