Finnish companies wrap up merger

The proposed merger of Kymmene with Repola of Finland, both forestry companies, will create the largest forest industry company in the world. United Paper Mills, Repola's subsidiary, will merge with Kymmene, forming UPM-Kymmene Corporation, generating net sales of 45 billion Finnish marks. Both companies will make savings of 1-2 billion Finnish marks in the areas of transport, logistics, timber procurement and sales.

North America and Europe's domination of the forest products industry may be undermined by forest product producers in Asia and Latin America. Looser environmental laws in these regions could give them an advantage in production over the strong environmental lobby in the West.
