Austria: Food and drink industry is improving
Article Abstract:
The Austrian food and drink industry is reporting growth for the first time since the country joined the EU. The industry reported 1% growth in the first six months of 2001, after it achieved stability in 2000. The two main contributors to this success were the soft drink industry, and in particular Red Bull, and the dairy and agricultural produce industry. The most important export markets were in Germany, where exports grew by 12.4%, although Austria still imports more to Germany than is exported. Half of the country's 23.5% export quota goes to Germany. Exports to the rest of the EU increased by 2% in comparison with 2000, and Austria achieved a surplus in its exports to mid and Eastern Europe.

Health foods and organic foods in Spain
Article Abstract:
The Spanish health food sector is fragmented. It encompasses around 100 mainly small- and medium-seized producers with about 40 of these accounting for 80% of production. The major suppliers of health foods include Novartis Consumer Health S.A. and Casa Santiveri. There are 388 processors and 7,000 farmers in the organic food sector and 75-90% of their produce is exported. Industry experts believe the Spanish health food market may be worth around Pta100 billion and that it has good potential for growth. Specialist stores account for three-quarters of health food retailing.
