Austria: Genetic research for cure of muscle disease
Article Abstract:
Reginald Bittner, scientist at the neuromuscular research department of the institute of anatomy of the University of Vienna, reported about the progress in genetic research to cure duchenne muscle dystrophy, a severe muscle disease effecting one out of 3,500 newly born males. Children diagnosed with the disease will have a life expectancy of only 20 years to 25 years. Bittner describes the research, which involves the transplantation of stem cells from the bone marrow of healthy mice into mice with muscle dystrophy, as successful. Even the heart muscle tissue regenerated after the transplantation. Although research has been carried out for five years now, long-term risks cannot be ruled out. Therefore, research tests on human beings diagnosed with the muscle disease will not take place for several years. Encouraging therapy tests though have been made with coronary thrombosis patients, applying adult stem cells directly into the affected heart zone. Only last week the EU-parliament resolved that the research with adult stem cells should have the priority over research with embryonic stem cells, which is, because of ethical reasons, still prohibited in many countries .
