Austria: KTM shows sustained growth
Article Abstract:
The Austrian based motorcycle manufacturer, KTM with a workforce of 1,038 is investing EUR 21mn in a research and development centre as well as a new motor works and international motor sport centre in order to safeguard growth in the industry. In the financial year of 2000/01, the profit before tax and interest was more than trebled compared to 2000, reaching EUR 20.2mn. KTM increased its turnover by 43% to EUR 230mn. With 45,648 motorcycles being sold, an increase of 34% was achieved. The US was the biggest market, with 13,900 machines being sold. The Austrian market share is 10%. KTM anticipates further growth, expecting to sell 60,000 motorcycles in 2002. In the first quarter of the new financial year of 2001/02, a 45% increase in the number of sales was shown, compared to 2000/01.

AUSTRIA: RECOVERY IN BICYCLE MARKET

A study by the consultancy company Kreutzer, Fischer & Partner concludes that the Austrian bicycle market has recovered, after being hit by the in-line skating boom in 1998. In 1999 the sales of bicycles grew by 30,000 units to 486,000 units in 1999. As the average price has risen from Sch 3,185 in 1998 to Sch 3,288 in 2000, turnover has increased by 10% to Sch 1.6bn

AUSTRIA: ELECTRIC VEHICLES BY REV
Article Abstract:
A company called REV (Rechargeable Electric Vehicles), which is backed by Italian investors, is looking for local subcontractors in Carinthia for the production of electric 2- and 3-wheel vehicles in Viktring. The company itself will concentrate on assembling and selling the vehicles. Initially it is to launch two vehicles. One of them will be a 3-wheeler targeting elderly consumers. It is said to be the first electric vehicle approved in the whole of the European Union.
