The Great Lakes area and the St Lawrence river system between the US and Canada still face environmental threats, despite recent improvements in water quality. There is a good track record of co-operation between the US, Canada and local governments, which bodes well for the future.

The closing of Newfoundland's cod fishery industry in May 1992 may be extended to the year 2000 if the number of cod does not increase. Canadians blame foreign fishermen who use the area out the Atlantic outside the 200-mile exclusive zone from which the cod migrate.

A government commission in Canada has reported that Banff National Park in Alberta, the nation's oldest and most revered, is headed for an ecological calamity. It is said that development in the park has severely impacted animal migrations and habitats.
