Austria: Last-minute bookings increasing
Article Abstract:
According to Laila Suppan-Dodo of the Austrian Tourist Service, last-minute bookings are on the increase following the terrorist attacks on the US on 11 September 2001 and their aftermath. Holidaymakers are waiting to see what the international situation is like and then booking 2-3 days before their holiday, although there are already bookings for Christmas. Unusually, Austria is the top tourist destination for Austrians in Autumn 2001, according to the Austrian tourist office. There is also a large demand for destinations which holidaymakers can drive to, for example Italy. In addition the demand for flights to Spain and Turkey is high, although demand is very low for destinations such as the US and Egypt. In total the number of flights booked is roughly 25% down on Autumn 2000, according to Wilfred Kropp, director of flight bookings company Amadeus Austria. Most of the foreign tourists visiting Austria are from Italy, Switzerland and Germany.
