Austria: Plastic bottle maker Alpla expanding

Austrian Hard-based Alwin Lehner GesmbH & Co KG (Alpla) is said to be one of the five largest producers of plastic bottles. In 2001 the company expects a 13% increase in turnover to EUR 1.24bn, which would be twice as high as in 1997. It employs about 5,000 staff at 55 companies in 28 countries. In 2002 Alpla is to build two new production plants in the US. The plants in Atlanta and Houston will employ about 100 people between them. In Austria, Alpla is investing about Sch 240mn in the construction of a 8,000-sq.m production facility in Fussach. Initially a part of the production and in the longer term perhaps all of it will move from Hard to Fussach. Alpla is working on the development of new barrier bottles with up to 6 layers of plastic and with good barrier properties against UV light and oxygen. This technology is to be launched "in the near future". Beside bottles, Alpla produces closures.

Austria: BKS Ovotherm has plans for expansion
Article Abstract:
Ernst Schmucker, general manager of BKS Ovotherm, which specialises in producing transparent egg cartons, has announced plans to extend its production to China and Iran for 2003. Another project in South Africa is also at the planning stage. The aim is to double the company's annual turnover of EUR 20mn within the next three years. BKS Ovotherm, based in Wiener Neudorf, produces 250mn cartons, which are sold in 80 countries worldwide. It is the global market leader and has a 30% share of the Austrian market.
