Austria: Restructuring at Berglandmilch
Article Abstract:
Austria's largest dairy producer, Oberoesterreich-based Berglandmilch, is to cut one third of its product range as part of its restructuring process, eliminating similar products and products which do not make a large profit. The restructuring process should be finished by the middle of 2002, when director Josef Schwaiger expects "significantly better results" than the company's predicted 2001 turnover of Sch 8bn. By 2005 he hopes that the exports will have risen 6% to 40% of turnover. Berglandmilch is also to sell products with an extended shelf life from October 2001. It is now unlikely that Berglandmilch will take over Niederoesterreich-based dairy producer NOM. The two companies together hold 60% of the Austrian market. Among others, France-based Danone and Italy-based Parmalat are still in talks with NOM.

AUSTRIA: PLANS OF BERGLANDMILCH
Article Abstract:
Austria's Berglandmilch is reacting to the increasing competition in the European dairy market by "optimising production". The strategy includes closing down two or three of the currently eight production facilities within the next few years. The product range under the Schardinger and Desserta brands is to be reduced. For further growth, Berglandmilch is planning acquisitions. For 2000, the dairy is expecting results similar to the previous years. In 1999, turnover grew from Sch 7bn to Sch 7.7bn.
