Detroit, MI, may be considered synonymous with the automobile manufacturing industry, yet the climate of international consolidation has prompted more automobile firms to explore other places as potential sites for car manufacturing operations. Decisions on auto manufacturing and assembly locations are based largely on logistical considerations, access to educational facilities, cost of living and quality of life.

The advent of the Internet has facilitated the acquisition of materials at a reduced cost. In particular, business-to-business hubs (B2B), the electronic version of trading bazaars, have been responsible for the integration of sourcing, purchasing and billing functions. By being incorporated in vertical industries, B2B hubs help firms improve their cash flow, increase inventory turns and improve capacity use.
