As Brazil goes ... a healthy Brazil will boost the region

International traders have held a long-standing view that the Brazilian economy sets the tone and pace for what happens in the rest of the Latin American region. However, although Brazil remains a significant factore in the health of other Latin American economies, it is no longer the lifeline of the region. A healthy Brazilian economy, nevertheless, will considerably bolster the region's other economies. An interview with State Dept Dir David Rogus reveals that long-term prospects for trade with Brazil are generally bright as the Brazilina economy continues to stabilize despite the devaluation of the national currency.

New Japanese accounting rules provide reality checks

Japanese companies are required to comply with new accounting rules starting on Apr 1, 1999, the start of the new fiscal year. The most important change will be in the reporting of consolidated earnings. Parent companies will no longer be allowed to conceal losses of their subsidiaries and both parents and subsidiaries will be required to report the losses of the entire group. As a result, the financial health of many Japanese firms will appear to be weaker.
