Automating the Japanese site
Article Abstract:
The automation of Japanese construction firm Obayashi's Sumida site in Tokyo, Japan, demonstrates the whole-building automated construction approach which Obayashi has taken: the automated building construction system (ABCS). The ABCS is a top-down approach which integrates a range of assembly and materials handling robots, and produces a more predictable site environment for individual robots. For the Sumida site, there were three main elements of automation: materials handling; locating and welding the steel frame; and placing the cladding and floor units.

Building a theory
Article Abstract:
The construction industry in late-1990s Britain is focussing on methods of extending industrialization. The reason for this focus is the need to overcome problems related to skills shortages, increasing costs and long delivery times. However, the trend has not included much consideration of occupant choice. A concept known as Supports, introduced by John Habraken in 1961, aimed to combine occupant choice with the economies of industrialization. UK policy-makers have been visiting other parts of Europe to discover how Supports-based projects fared.
