Avoiding the trap of becoming the man-in-the-middle
Article Abstract:
Executives and managers at all levels often feel that they are torn between meeting upper management performance requirements and showing consideration for their subordinates. Integrating these conflicting desires of making subordinates produce and making subordinates feel good about producing can be accomplished through the process known as managing by walking around. In addition, encouraging goal sharing by helping employees to align their objectives with those of the company can make the manager's workday less troubled. Managers can also alleviate the feeling of being trapped in the middle by promoting the subordinates' sense of ownership in the firm and its products. The differences among charismatic leaders, transactional leaders and transformational leaders are also discussed, leading to the conclusion that transformational leadership is the most effective method.

Why industry has such difficulty attracting the best young talent
Article Abstract:
For some time in Great Britain (and to a lesser extent elsewhere in Europe) there has been a general distaste for business management by the upper classes, who consider the direction of the day-to-day operations of a business to be a lowly occupation. This social attitude has resulted in a shortage of college graduates entering industry as anything other than engineers or other specialists, which in turn has limited the effectiveness of industrial managers. Efforts being made by industry to attract the best and brightest of the British college graduates and how the British education system could be changed to improve the business acumen of graduates are described.
