Aznar sets out privatisation objectives
Article Abstract:
Jose-Maria Aznar, the new Spanish prime minster, wants to reorganise the public sector, encourage deregulation and prepare a transparent privatisation plan. Under the Partido Popular (PP) conservative government, privatisation is expected to be more far reaching and rapid. Industry minister Josep Pique has called for the break up of Teneo, a state holding company, including Endesa, the electricity company, and Iberia, an airline.

Venezuela takes medicine from IMF
Article Abstract:
Venezuela is to undertake a programme of privatisation following a recent agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on economic stabilisation. It plans to reform the severance payment system and reorganise the financial sector. The government will sell its remaining holding in CANTV, the national telecoms monopoly and holdings in several aluminium sector companies.

Spain aims to raise $5 billion in 1997
Article Abstract:
The new conservative government in Spain is hoping to raise 3 trillion Pesetas from privatisations during the next four years, although the timing of the sell offs will depend on the companies conditions and the requirements of economic policy. The remaining stakes in Enagas and Gas Natural will be sold by September and Repsol is said to be ready for immediate privatisation.
