BARELY AFLOAT
Article Abstract:
The flat glass industry has been adversely affected by excess capacity. The industry has increased its capacity by about 275 percent to 642,500 metric tonnes from 171,500 metric tonnes since 1992-93 but has only been growing at about 10 percent per annum. Domestic producers claim that South East Asian manufacturers are dumping cheap float glass into India at prices that are below their cost of production. The industry says that supply of raw material is restricted while imports of finished goods is allowed. The domestic price of soda ash, which is a major raw material, is Rs8,625 per mt while it is Rs4,248 per mt in the international markets. (khr)
