BBV y Santander, a por otro banco en Brasil
Article Abstract:
The Spanish banks Banco Santander and Banco Bilbao Vizcaya (BBV) will bid in the privatisation of the Brazilian bank Banco Minas de Gerais (Bemge). The Brazilian State of Minas de Gerais owns an 89% which is expected to amount to a minimum of R$ 307mn. In case that small shareholders who control a 11% stake in the bank, where to sell it, the price could reach R$ 346mn. Bemge total assets amount to R$ 3,335mn. The bank made R$ 78.4mn losses through its 427 offices in 1997. The Spanish banks will have to compete with ABN Amro, and the Brazilian banks Banco Itau, Bradesco, Meridional, Varejo, Mercure International, and Banco Bozano Simonsen.

Austria's biggest bank, Bank Austria, has frozen plans to increase its stake in International Moscow Bank (IMB) from 13% at present. At the end of August 1998 Bank Austria's lending in Russia amounted to Sch 12.6bn (down from Sch 13.4bn at the end of June 1998). Since then the total has been reduced. Of the Sch 12.6bn, about Sch 4.2bn is described as virtually no-risk loans. For the rest, the bank had made provisions of 50% in 1997. The bank's provisions for derivatives in Russia are between Sch 2.5bn and Sch 4.5bn.
