BELGIUM: RESISTANCE TO CORA-DELHAIZE PROJECT
Article Abstract:
The Cora-Delhaize group plans to invest over BFr 6bn in the construction of a 140,000 square metre shopping centre at Mouscron. This shopping centre, named Cora Botanique, will have a 16,000 square metre hypermarket, plus 80 boutiques, an 'educational botanical park,' chain restaurants, a bowling alley, and a multiplex cinema. The group must meet urban certificate requirements before it can obtain the urbanism permit, and then a socio-economic investigation must be carried out. Patrick Vantomme, who operates a supermarket at Evregnies, is the leader of the opponents to this project, which has roused his vigorous opposition. He thinks that if this shopping centre is built, it may destabilise the towns of Courtrai, Tournai, and Mouscron. He points out that this project is contrary to the regional development scheme for regional space, and the Walloon regional planning code, which places a priority on town centres and bans such construction on the outskirts of towns.
