FRANCE: THE FRENCH AND SHOPPING
Article Abstract:
A survey by Parcours shows that 60% of the French want to remain in shopping centres for a short a time as possible, and 82% express the same attitude to transport, but a third would like to find stores in transport areas. The French do their shopping an average of 2.9 times a week. Seventy per cent do their shopping when leaving work, 30% say that they do it at lunch, and 10% do it on Sunday. Half of the French take an hour to do their shopping, for 48% of them, time is a criteria in choosing a store. This study was carried out in June 1999 on a sample of 2,021 people aged fifteen or older.

FRANCE: STORES AND SECURITY
Article Abstract:
In 1999, retail chains invested FFr 2.3bn in protecting their merchandise and their clients. FFr 740mn was spent on portals to protect against theft, FFr 620m was spent on human surveillance, FFr 480 went for video surveillance, FFr 310mn went for access control and alarms, and FFr 200mn was spend on technical management of buildings. At the first National Conference of Local Police, shopkeepers were invited to participate in setting up the first local police by June 2002. Among new surveillance technology there are radio frequency, detection terminals which supply information for remote maintenance, electronic labels, and digital video surveillance. Carrefour combats theft by careful client reception, and keeping the store clean, maintaining a good atmosphere among the personnel, and by having close contact with the police and representatives of the courts.

FRANCE: PAY OF STORE EMPLOYEES
Article Abstract:
Even though certain retail chains have increased their employees' salaries (a 2% rise at Auchan and a 1.7% rise at Carrefour), the salary level of the retail sector is lagging behind in terms of the level of qualification and the market. The salaries of retail executives are 15% to 20% less than those in other sectors and the salaries of non-executives are 25% to 40% less. Retailers are again behind in terms of pay increases, which range from 1% to 2%, while the average rises in other sectors ranges from 3.5% to 5%. According to the head of the ABCD+ recruitment firm, salaries must follow by 10% to 15% the changes in the level of qualification and the market, in order to keep employees loyal and to attract young people. Retailers must also develop extras, such as Carrefour's 5% rebate on their purchases, training, and improvements in part-time contracts, and a share-purchasing program.
