Best & Crompton Engineering Ltd (BCEL) plans to hive off its four strategic business units (SBUs) as independent companies. It is planning to focus on the infrastructure projects for power evacuation and hydraulic engineering, electro-mechanical products for power sector and railways, pumps for a wide range of applications and engineering consultancy services for infrastructure sector. It plans to capitalise, downsize, relocate or close down units to make SBUs viable as separate companies. It plans to promote its Beacon brand and market all products under this brand. Two SBUs are performing well but manufacturing operations are yet to recover. It plans to relocate its pumps unit from Bangalore to Chennai. It plans to develop its prime properties to generate funds for its working capital. (rk)(m)

Best & Crompton Engineering Ltd of Chennai has won two orders valued at Rs5.7 crore for small hydel projects in the Pithoragarh district of Uttar Pradesh from the Uttar Pradesh Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd. The order is for supplying 2x1500 kw with Pelton turbines and 2x750 kw with Francis turbines. The company had earlier executed a small hydel project of 2x1000 kw for the same client. (khr)
