Banco Hispano Santander Central S.A. of Spain has proposed the acquisition of Brazil's Banco de Estado de Sao Paulo. The #3.6 billion deal, however, has met with opposition from investors. The Spanish bank's bid was triple the second-best bid and five times the book value.

BNP-Paribas bids for remaining 55% of BancWest

French banking giant BNP Paribas S.A. has made offer to acquire BancWest Bancorp Inc., for $2.45 billion. The acquisition of BanCWest, based in Honolulu, Hawaii, would expand BNP Paribas S.A.'s retail banking business in the United States.
