BSkyB confirms talks with Manchester United

British Sky Broadcasting PLC, is in negotiations to acquire Manchester United PLC, one of the most popular soccer clubs in England. BSkyB, which is the UK satellite television unit of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., may or may not acquire Manchester after the preliminary talks. BSkyB officials also refused to comment on reports that the company is willing to pay up to 75 million pounds sterling to acquire Manchester United. Meanwhile, Sunday Telegraph newspaper reported that Murdoch has already acquired a 14% stake in the club from its chairman, Martin Edwards for 80 million pounds sterling.

Coke unit's loss widens in 1st half
Article Abstract:
Coca-Cola Beverages PLC (CCB) posted a huge widening of its pretax losses for the first-half of 1999. The unit was hurt by Eastern Europe's economic instability as well as by a contamination scare in Western Europe. CCB posted 16.2 million pound sterling (24.6 million euros) in pretax losses for the six-month period ending on July 2. During the same period in 1998, the company posted 2 million pound sterling.
