Article Abstract:
The French building and civil industries posted a total export turnover of FFr 83.7bn in 1997, of which 36.7% was from international sales. In 1996, France led in 1996 with a 35.5% share of exports, followed by Great Britain with 32.9%, Germany with 31.8%, and the United States with 21.1%. The European Union is the principal outlet for the French building and civil industries, representing 41.5% of the total export turnover in 1997, followed by Asia and Oceania, 17.5%, and Africa with 16.4%. The two fastest-growing regions in 1997 for French building and civil industries were the European Union with a turnover of FFr 34bn, compared with FFr 32bn in 1996, and nearly FFr 15bn for Asia-Oceania, compared with FFr 12bn in 1996. Electricity is the leading French building and civil industries export activity, representing 21% of the total exports in 1997, followed by building with 20.8%, and roads and earthworks with 19.5%. Electricity and roads and earthworks posted the best growth in the sector in 1997, with more than FFr 18bn for electricity, compared with FFr 13bn in 1996, and FFr 16bn for roads and earthworks, compared with about FFr 13.5bn in 1996.

Frederic Mercier, formerly International Marketing Manager at Pommery of the LVMH group, has been named Marketing Manager for South Europe - including France - at Veuve Clicquot of the same group. Mr Mercier joined Pommery in 1997 after five years at Moet & Chandon.

The French luxury papers export company, Les Papiers Jean Rouget, was recently awarded with the Moci Editors Trophy 2001 for international export. The award recognises the growth of more than 550% in turnover in export, in the last three years.
