Golden parachutes: civil servants bailing out before 1997
Article Abstract:
Many long-term Hong Kong civil servants are concerned about their ability to adapt to a Chinese system after 1997 and so are requesting early retirement, 844 in 1994 compared to 585 in 1993. However, young people continue to apply for civil service jobs and the percent leaving before completing two years of service has dropped to 5% from 7.8% in 1992. One concern among current civil servants is if the merit-based promotion system will be replaced with a system based on personal patronage and loyalty to the Communist Party.

Pressing the flesh: direct-marketer Amway expands into China
Article Abstract:
Amway is expanding into China and finding the market both welcoming and skeptical of direct-marketing companies. Tens of thousands of the latter have sprung up in the past three years, many selling shoddy goods. Amway, the world's largest direct-marketing company, hopes to exceed Avon's success by making $25 million to $35 million in sales in 1995. It has put $100 million into a new plant in Guangzhou as well as numerous distribution outlets, and expects these facilities to meet its needs for five years.
