Bakun project shifts hands
Article Abstract:
Ekran Bhd's concession to develop and operate Malaysia's proposed 15-bil-ringgit Bakun dam was canceled by the Malaysian government after the firm opposed the government's plan to indefinitely delay the project. Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that they will study how much compensation should be given to Ekran for the firm's investment in the project so far. Analysts claim that the firm's pullout from the project and the government's decision to offer compensation may be inclined to hurt the stock market.

Ekran says revenue from Bakun project to begin belatedly
Article Abstract:
Ekran Chmn. Ting Pek Khiing recently admitted during a press conference that the company may not be able to meet its projected $73.3 million profit for FY 1994 because of delays in its Bakun hydroelectric dam project. Ting stressed that this increase in profit will instead be reflected in the company's FY 1995 financial report. Observers believe Ekran will soon receive government approval for the project and it has already been asked to proceed with all necessary preparatory work.

U.S. firms are absent from list of bidders for China dam project
Article Abstract:
The Clinton administration's decision to block export credits for China's $24 billion Three Gorges Dam project has effectively shut out US firms from what experts view as the world's biggest infrastructure undertaking. Several US companies had been eager to participate in the project, only to be frustrated by policy considerations. The Chinese government is already taking bids for 14 of the planned dam's 26 turbine generators.
