Balance of power
Article Abstract:
It is likely that Indonesian armed forces commander and Defence Minister General Wiranto will face challenges to his authority as senior members in the new cabinet of President B.J. Habibie seek to assert themselves. Some observers believe that there is a worrying shift towards Muslim interference in military matters. If this is the case, then relations between leading generals and the new administration could become even more strained. There is growing pressure on the concept of dual function, under which the armed forces have an institutionalized role in political and social life in Indonesia.

Prisoners of history: ex-detainees still live as outcasts
Article Abstract:
Three decades after an abortive coup in Indonesia led to the slaughter of 500,000 and the imprisonment of 1.4 million, former prisoners must struggle to live. Their identity cards mark them as ex-political prisoners, making many avenues of work off-limits. Now the govt is again warning of a possible communist threat, this time from within the opposition Indonesian Democratic Party. Pramoedya Ananta Toer, one of the best-known detainees, is publishing in Indonesian his memoirs of ten years in a work camp where hundreds died.

Clement times: Suharto frees prisoners, lightens coup-era blacklist
Article Abstract:
Indonesian President Suharto's July 28, 1995 decision to free former Deputy Prime Minister Subandrio and other political prisoners, and subsequently to drop the 'ET' label for 1.35 million people, signals new confidence. He appears willing to allow more open questioning of his 28-year rule's legitimacy, and to challenge the military over the issue. Top army officials seemed surprised, and demanded case-by-case treatment at least of individuals linked to the outlawed Communist Party of Indonesia.
