Many small companies find it hard to survive as slump persists
Article Abstract:
The economic slowdown in Japan has greatly affected small businesses in the country. Since 1991, some two million jobs have been phased out in small and medium-sized firms throughout the country. This alarming trend is attributed to price downturns, decreased consumer demand and price cutting as demanded by large corporations which purchase their products. Large companies are spared from these problems since they can force suppliers to reduce prices or resort to low-cost imported parts, among other alternatives.

As Japan rebuilds, the need for stability defuses post-quake frustrations for now
Article Abstract:
The massive earthquake that devastated western Japan in Jan. 1995 appears to have relegated politics to the backseat, as the Japanese are preoccupied with the need to rebuild. The disaster has prompted a truce in Prime Min Tomiichi Murayama's troubled Socialist Party, as the refugee crisis took priority. However, it is feared that these quake-related issues will be used against the Socialists by their rivals when local and parliamentary elections are held in Apr. and Jul. 1995, respectively.

Japan's cabinet removes 3 leaders of bureaucracies
Article Abstract:
The cabinet of Japanese Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama have terminated the services of three government bureaucrats for allegedly obstructing needed political and economic reforms. This development is seen by observers as a move by the country's politicians to prune the powers of the bureaucracy whose policies have been odds several times with those of elected officials. Earlier, the mass media has widely criticized the policies of the bureaucracy.
