Band aid: personal taxes
Article Abstract:
Britain's new tax proposal is politically clever in that its new low-rate band of 20% seems to help the poor while promising the rich a transition to a lower base rate. A better way would be to raise the minimum income that is taxed. More analysis of the tax proposal is given.

Soak the not-so-rich

The Labor Party has promised two changes regarding personal taxation. The party will increase the top rate of income tax to 50%, which will affect high-income earners. The party will also abolish the upper ceiling on employees' national insurance contributions.

Britain recently raised taxes on company cars to equal what private owners pay, but chancellor Norman Lamont wants to simplify the taxes so they are based on the value of the car. Automobile parking spaces will now also be taxed.
