Bangkok cut; Thailand aims to become a regional diamond hub
Article Abstract:
Bangkok diamond cutters and traders hope to make Thailand a regional center to compete with India and Israel, but taxes and rising labor costs are driving some elsewhere. The market emerged a decade ago when business in other gems fell off, and now Bangkok is the fifth-largest diamond center in the world. Annual growth rates of 25% have fallen to 10%, but that looks good in the midst of a worldwide slump. De Beers, the industry's top conglomerate, expects East Asia's demand for diamonds to grow quickly through the year 2000.

Paper chase: Kuala Lumpur exchange defends stock's suspension
Article Abstract:
Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE) officials intervened at the height of a bull market to quell a burst of speculative trading. The price of Union Paper Holdings Bhd (UPHB) stock was being driven up by traders accused of price manipulation and short-selling. Critics charge that the KLSE cost investors significant sums when it fixed the price for trading. KLSE officials defend their move as a necessary stabilization of the market and its credibility. KLSE's actions have had only a limited negative effect on the bull market.

A nation's conscience
Article Abstract:
No changes have taken place in the basic structure of the political system constructed by former Indonesian President Suharto, according to writer Pramoedya Ananta Toer, who was a political prisoner for 14 years and is still under virtual house arrest in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Indonesian army continues to play a key role in politics, and this means that civil society remains under the control of the army, regardless of the actions of politicians. He regards Indonesian culture as an obstacle to change.
