Bank and Eco Park compared: Both the Commerzbank and the Eco Park have environmental agendas. For the bank, the focus is energy. For the ecopark, all aspects of the building are embraced
Article Abstract:
The design of the Commerzbank in Frankfurt and the Eco Park in Wales are compared and both buildings are described as appropriate to their location. The Unit 1 building on the Eco Park has been designed to reduce embodied energy and has collected the full set of BREEAM points. The building is simple but robust, whereas the bank building will have to rely on sophisticated building management equipment and people. The bank does feature natural ventilation and daylighting and the Unit 1 building draws on local materials that have undergone minimum processing.

More than skin deep: developments in building envelopes for tomorrow, and beyond, were the subject of this year's international ICBEST conference in Bath
Article Abstract:
The International Conference on Envelope systems and Technology was held in Bath in 1997, and the theme was building envelope developments for the future. Discussions centered on engineering with glass and how confidence in the technology can be increased, the viability of a mainstream photovoltaic market and wet sealant failures. New state of the art insulating foil cushions for atria and rooflights were described, and there was an update on transparent insulation development.

How smart is your building?
Article Abstract:
Architect students should be encouraged to spend more time on the practicality of designs, making sure the eventual design will work for the people expected to use it. Designing intelligent buildings should include commissioning lighting systems which incorporate technology and control systems. Intelligent buildings use control systems to gauge different factors which can be altered by use of heating, lighting and ventilation.
