Feeling the squeeze
Article Abstract:
Indonesian private banks are financially vulnerable. The speculative attack on the rupiah, and its Aug 1997 flotation, highlighted their insecurity. Indonesian banks, operating in an overcrowded market, have pursued a policy of reckless loan expansion in an attempt to increase their market share. This policy resulted in them accumulating a high percentage of nonperforming loans; 9% of the 331 trillion rupiah outstanding loans, according to World Bank estimates for 1996. Central bank Bank Indonesia has tried hard to curb the problems, but the threat of systemic failure remains strong.
