Banks worldwide are recovering from excessive lending practices and expansion efforts that forced some out of business. Banks are learning to adapt to free markets by cutting costs and reducing capacity through mergers. Efficiency and profitability is being favored over asset growth and market share.

The proliferating number of commercial banks in Russia are hindered by a number of outdated practices. Most banks are closely tied to state businesses, providing them with cheap credit. Russian banks are not free to convert currency.
